Students for International Knowledge First Annual Banquet Summary
Last Wednesday, May 24, faculty supporters of Students for International Knowledge along with SIK members gathered in the Upper Commons for the First Annual Banquet, featuring musical guest, Jamal, who delighted the audience with a mix of Latin American and Middle Eastern songs. While enjoying a tasty Asian buffet, Professor and advisor Dr. David Yaghoubian presented, “10 Things Americans Should Know About Iran.” His speech focused on common misconceptions and little known facts about Iran. Guests were treated to a peek at summer in Palestine through a slide show given by Dinna Omar, secretary, who spent last summer in Palestine through a study abroad program. She encouraged students to apply for aid so they, too, can travel abroad.

President Andre Castillo’s speech, “S.I.K. –Past Present and Future,” revealed the heartwarming real-life story of a young man he met in Palestine, the victim of a gunshot wound that left him paralyzed and how his tale helped inspire the mission for S.I.K. Additionally, he reminded the audience not to lose sight of the purpose of S.I.K. as the organization continues to expand. Another factor, contributions from students and faculty, were acknowledged by Vice President Nick Arellano; these have enabled S.I.K. to launch with an awesome start. Our incoming secretary, thanked the guests for attending and for their efforts. To close the event, a recognition award was presented to Keran Choudry for excellence in her presentation, “Women’s Rights Violations in Southeast Asia: Abuse, Killing, and Honor.” Lastly, newly elected A.S.I. President, Anthony Conley gave a word of support to S.I.K.

With so many accomplishments to celebrate; there is no doubt that the only thing left to say is: People, this is only the beginning!

Mr. Paul Pai, CSUSB's Mandarin instructor, will be hosting an information session this Friday regarding opportunities to learn Mandarin abroad.  Taiwan's government has different incentives available for students who want to learn Mandarin in Taiwan for at least 6 months.  These include scholarships, assistanships, and stipends.

Taiwanese government officials will be there to provide more details on these opportunities to learn Mandarin in Taiwan.  I will be attending and I hope to see you there.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Former reporter Yvonne Ridley, who was captured by
the Taliban while covering the war in Afghanistan and later converted to
Islam, will speak about her experiences during her June 1 appearance at Cal
State San Bernardino.

"In the Hands of the Taliban: A Captive's Account" will have Ridley, a
former reporter for the British Daily Express at the time the Taliban took
her hostage, tell her story and answer questions. The event takes place from
noon to 2 p.m. at the Santos Manuel Student Union Events Center. The event
is free and open to the public. Parking is $3.

Ridley is a prominent international reporter who has covered stories for
more than 20 years in more than 25 countries at the time of her capture.
After her release and return to England, she continued her activities in the
field of media. She also ran and won in the 2005 British political election.
She later converted to Islam and is the author of "In the Hands of the
Taliban: Her Extraordinary Story" and "Ticket to Paradise."

She has been an invited speaker all over the world, ranging from Europe,
Asia and the Middle East, to Australia and North America on her recollection
of her days as a captive and her perceptions of the war in Afghanistan as
